For Major Leaguers who have played over 2 seasons and into a third (making them arbitration eligible the following offseason), there is a special rule for players who have barely played 2 seasons (typically under a specific cutoff). They are basically granted a 4th year of arbitration so that the team that owns them has them locked down an extra year. These players are called Super Twos. In Rounding Third, a 4th year of arbitration is not valid and a player becomes a Free Agent as stated after 6 years of protection. To retain the player, a Franchise Tag must be used[/size][/u] Since the players who are now in their 4th year of Arbitration are now the ones who are effected by this, it was the Super Twos in 2009 we are talking about.
